The role includes various responsibilities.

The engineering lead should write less code than the senior developers on the team, but they should write some code to keep their skills sharp and support the team on maintaining and achieving deadlines.

They also need to be good at helping their team members get “unstuck.” Sometimes this means answering technical questions, and sometimes it means resolving disputes between team members.

They are likely to play a role in training new engineers, as well as evaluating candidates on technical and interpersonal bases.

They have a more strategic role by consulting with the founders on software choices and jumping in on important sales calls. They are responsible in converting the high-level functional specifications and customers’ requirements into technical specifications and architectural designs, working with the founders and the project manager.

It is critical that they understand the customers’ requirements and priorities and deliver accordingly without diverting into unnecessary tasks while having limited resources. They should plan and schedule appropriately not to miss promises given to customers, and be able to communicate professionally about delays in a timely manner.

They should find solutions for blockers and delays, always keeping in mind that customers come first.

Technical work includes writing code, code reviews, hunting down bugs, pairing with teammates, and reading software updates and best practices.

Recruiting time includes going to conferences, meetups, and coding bootcamps; meeting with job candidates; and evaluating technical screenings.

The role also includes direct people management, creating timelines, strategic planning, and meetings with technical and nontechnical team members.
